Faith: The Journey from Salvation to Glorification
When does faith end? The answer may surprise you - it never does. From the moment of salvation until we reach heaven's gates, faith remains an integral part of our spiritual journey. It's not a one-time event, but a continual process of growth and deepening trust in God.
Our faith journey begins with saving faith - that pivotal moment when we put our trust in Jesus Christ for salvation. As Ephesians 2:8-9 beautifully articulates, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." This foundational truth reminds us that our salvation is not earned through our own efforts, but is a gift freely given by God, accessed through faith.
However, the story doesn't end there. While saving faith is the crucial first step, it's meant to be the beginning of a lifelong journey, not the final destination. God calls us to develop an abiding faith - a faith that permeates every aspect of our daily lives and continues to grow stronger over time.
James 2:26 challenges us with a sobering truth: "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead." True, living faith inevitably produces action. It changes how we think, speak, and behave. We begin to surprise ourselves, holding our tongue when we would have lashed out before, or extending kindness to those we once ignored. These are the tangible fruits of a growing, abiding faith.
The apostle Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 5:7 take on new meaning in this context: "For we live by faith, not by sight." This isn't just a nice platitude; it's a call to action. In a world that can often seem dark and chaotic, we're challenged to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty even when circumstances appear bleak. Our faith becomes the lens through which we view and navigate life's challenges.
But how does this faith manifest itself? Galatians 5:6 provides a beautiful answer: "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." As our faith grows, so does our capacity to love others. We become kinder, gentler, more patient - reflecting the character of Christ to a world in desperate need of His love.
This growth isn't always easy or comfortable. Sometimes our faith is tested through trials and hardships. Yet even in these moments, we're encouraged to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). It's in the crucible of difficulty that our faith often grows the strongest.
Consider the powerful testimony of those who have gone before us. Hebrews 11, often called the "Hall of Faith," recounts the stories of men and women who lived by faith, often in the face of tremendous adversity. They remind us that "without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him" (Hebrews 11:6).
So how do we cultivate this kind of robust, growing faith? It starts with recognizing that faith, like any relationship, requires nurturing. We feed our faith through regular engagement with God's Word, through prayer, and through fellowship with other believers. We exercise our faith by stepping out in obedience, even when it's uncomfortable or counter-cultural.
It's also crucial to remember that faith isn't about perfection, but progression. There may be seasons where we feel our faith has plateaued or even regressed. In these moments, we can take heart in knowing that God is faithful even when we struggle. He invites us to come to Him honestly, to pour out our doubts and fears, and to ask for the grace to believe and trust more deeply.
As we progress in our faith journey, we begin to see the world differently. We recognize the spiritual battles raging behind the scenes of everyday life. We become more attuned to the needs of those around us, more compassionate towards the hurting, and more bold in sharing the hope we have in Christ.
Ultimately, a growing faith changes not just our actions, but our very identity. We begin to see ourselves as God sees us - beloved children, co-heirs with Christ, ambassadors of His kingdom. This perspective shift empowers us to live with purpose and confidence, knowing that our lives have eternal significance.
At the end of his life, the apostle Paul was able to declare, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7). This should be the goal for every believer - not just to start with faith, but to persevere in it until the very end.
So let us not be content with a stagnant faith. Let's pursue a faith that is ever-growing, ever-deepening, ever-expanding our vision of who God is and what He can do through us. Let's cultivate a faith that moves mountains, that overcomes fear, that loves extravagantly, and that points others to the hope we have in Jesus Christ.
Remember, faith is not finished until we stand face to face with our Savior. Until that day, may we continue to grow, to trust, and to live out our faith in ways that impact our world for eternity. For it is then that we will hear those coveted words, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Let that be the goal that spurs us on, keeping our faith vibrant and alive until we reach our heavenly home.
